I went to Quran.com to read a bit of the Quran. I read the first surah which was very short. There is like an audio recording playback where a nice sounding man recites the verses for me in Arabic. I listened to this for the first surah but when I got into the second, I turned it off because I found it a bit distracting. I made a bit of progress through the second surah but it is very very long and I’ll continue it later. This is what I learned from this reading and some quick online searches.
- The Quran is divided into surahs. Each of the 114 surahs is like a chapter in the Quran, the holy book of Islam.
- The Quran is the word directly from God himself.
- The Quran states that true believers in God will be rewarded while fake believers will be punished. Fake believers come in all shapes and forms and will deceive others to make them believe that they are real believers. In terms of Islam, they will cheat. This cheating only hurts them, according to the Quran, because God knows their intentions.
- God split heaven into seven different heavens. I read some more about this online but what I’m about to say in this bullet I have not seen in the Quran yet. This is what one website says. These heavens are superimposed on one another and we are currently in the lowest heaven. The other heavens exist in different dimensions. Science’s discovery of dark matter confirms the existence of other heavens that are superimposed on our plane of existence.
- This is from online- Before handling the Quran, you need to do wadhu, or a special cleaning thing. Women who are menstruating need to do this extra and in some sources, they cannot even touch the Quran. The Quran should not be put on the floor or brought into the bathroom. Non-Muslims cannot touch the physical Quran written in Arabic. Ideally, people reading the Quran should dress nicely and boys should wear a cap while girls wear a hijab. You should not lie down or sit improperly when reading the Quran. Reciting the Quran must be done in a slow and beautiful voice. Yawning is not allowed while reading the Quran because it is disrespectful towards God and is associated with the devil. The Quran, or any sacred text in Islam, cannot be used as a pillow. You cannot allow spit to touch the Quran. You cannot draw or doodle in a Quran. If a Quran is damaged, the ways to dispose of it are to wrap it up and bury it deep underground, soak it in water until all the dye disappears, or in extreme cases, burning it completely.
- God gave Adam, the first man, life.
- God told the angels to prostrate, or show deep respect to Adam, but Iblis, a jinn, refused. Iblis was the name of Satan before he fell from grace
- According to the Quran and Nour, jinns are a type of creature created by God that exist of smokeless fire. They have free will and exist on a different dimension than us. However, they can interact with our world but we can’t see them.
- The Quran demands praying and paying alms-tax, which is like a tax of 2.5% in which Muslims must pay when they have above a certain level of wealth.
That’s all I can remember right now from what I just read in the last hour. The Quran is very hard to read. The perspective changes so often and I often can’t really tell who is speaking and who is the subject of each sentence. There are also a lot of biblical like references of things and people I don’t know so I’m looking them up but it’s taking forever. This is exhausting but it’s fun. I learned cool stuff already.
